Pre-Independence Day Report

Tuesday, July 03, 2007

The time difference between Chennai/Auroville and the west coast of the U.S. is 12 ½ hours, India being later. Thus, as I write this, it is almost a quarter past 5 p.m. on July 3 in Auroville and 4:44 a.m. in California and Arizona. So those of us who remain  sentimental about the “myth of America” get to celebrate Independence day a bit earlier than those of you who abide in the “land of the free and the home of the brave.”

While the vast bulk of American leadership has given us little to be proud of lately, hope springs eternal and it is only rational to choose optimism over despair. The strong delusion that drives the collective ego to seek to dominate and control, must eventually evaporate to reveal our true nature and the oneness of all life.

This realization has come back to me over the past few days as I’ve been reading Eckhart Tolle’s latest, The New Earth, which I found in the Verite library. Finding it has been like meeting an old friend. A few years ago, I had his bestseller, The Power of Now, on audio tape and listened to it repeatedly on a cross-country motor trip, then a couple times afterward. Of all the sages and sources that have come to my attention, I rate Tolle’s work as the clearest, most accessible, perhaps alongside, Ken Keyes’s Handbook to Higher Consciousness.

I’ll not try to summarize or interpret any of that but leave it to the seeker to find his/her own answers under one of those “rocks,” or in whatever nook or cranny might beckon them.

The illness I had contracted in China has continued to sap my energy, so I’ve taken the opportunity to study, do some yoga, and sleep. I spent most of this afternoon sleeping, despite the oppressive heat. A cup of green tea and a couple fresh small lemons (that really look to be limes) have picked me up.

Olivier and I have met almost every day for a couple hours, trying to come to a meeting of the minds on what can be done here during the summer doldrums to advance the projects we’ve been discussion for the past few months. These are:

  1. Refinement of the Auroville ACCESS exchange system,
  2. Roughing out a basic framework and implementation plan for a regional exchange system for the south of India,
  3. The compilation and production of educational materials, simulations, games, and curricula suitable for various educational levels. There is, of course a ton of that stuff that’s been developed over the past 25 years, but it needs to be collected and refined.

We’re hoping to identify some people and resources both from the Auroville region and abroad that can be enlisted to champion these projects. Small funding is available, but much more will be required if we’re to make progress this year.

My next major presentation will be July 24 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is titled The End of Money and the Liberation of Exchange and will be presented at the International Conference on Gold Dinar Economy.
